Measuring Health-Related Quality of Life in Dementia

Abstract Dementia presents unique challenges for the measurement of health-related quality life (HRQL). The subjective nature HRQL construct, cognitive demands questionnaires, and necessity sometimes relying on a proxy report taken together mean that traditional questionnaires scored using classical psychometrics may not provide robust measurement. Advanced psychometric methods, such as those based Rasch theory, can possible solutions to these challenges. methods have been used with DEMQOL/DEMQOL-Proxy disease specific instrument measure in people dementia, scales, equate self- proxy-reported instruments, create cross walk from equivalent self-reported These also qualitative understanding statistical change. theory therefore potentially powerful way address measuring dementia.
